Post-Assad Syria remains highly unstable, with persistent sectarian violence, extremist groups exploiting governance vacuums, and the gradual disengagement of external actors such as the United States, Russia, and Iran. This instability risks regional spillover, particularly along the Turkish border, and may contribute to renewed irregular migration to the European Union and extremist incubation.
This policy brief analyzes the roots of Syria’s instability and proposes recommendations for how the European Union can support reconstruction and peacebuilding.
